Piet Oudolf, one of the worlds great plantsmen and garden designers recently published his book “Landscapes in Landscapes“.    The book has been selected by the American Society of Landscape Architects as one of the Best Books of 2011.   R. P. Marzilli & Company worked with Piet to construct the Nantucket Garden featured in this book which includes 23 of Piet’s public and private gardens from around the world.

This seaside estate features meandering paths, long stone drives, sculpted land masses, sweeping lawns, bent grass tennis, croquet and putting greens. Approximately 7500 trees and shrubs, and tens of thousands of perennials and grasses are densely planted throughout the site.  

The thousands of grasses simply bend over in the wind and are interspersed with flowering perennials.  The crisscrossing stone paths along with the thickly planted perennials create a sensation of walking through a seaside botanical garden.  Flowers are not dead-headed, which creates a wonderful winter effect when encrusted with ice over the winter months.  Piet designed a beautiful garden to be enjoyed all year round.  Enjoy Piet’s designs by visiting one of his public gardens such as The High Line in Manhattan or by reading this impressive book.

R. P. Marzilli & Company is the proud recipient of the Grand Award for Environmental Improvement by the Professional Landcare Network (PLANET) . Bob Marzilli attended the award ceremony at the annual Green Industry Conference and Expo in Louisville, Kentucky on October 28th and accepted the award on behalf of the company.

This project included a Biotop Natural Swimming Pool, grass tennis court, croquet court, massive perennial plantings, mature tree plantings, and pathways on a 12 acre ocean-front site.  The project was featured in Cape Cod Home Magazine’s Summer 2011 issue.

Organic yard maintained by R.P. Marzilli

This year our Maintenance Division is providing more organic landscaping services.  Bob Bellacqua, Account Manager at RPM’s Landscape Maintenance Division, is leading the way, always experimenting and refining methods on his own yard.

“A healthy, organic lawn resists disease and ultimately becomes more economical because it feeds off of itself, requiring less fertilizer,” says Bob.  Bob uses a special compost spreader to create a top dressing of approximately 1/2” compost over the existing lawn to feed the soil.  We source the compost from dairy farms, where the soil is rich in earth worms and manure, and tests high for phosphorous (for strong root growth) and potassium (helps plants use water and resist drought).

Earthworms till the soil, break down organic matter and add nutrients.  To succeed, Bob says, “there must be a commitment and understanding that it may be a couple of months before you start seeing results.”  People become dependent on repeated application of nitrogen which gets grass green quickly, but fizzles in a couple of weeks.  Putting down pesticides and fungicides kill earthworms and short-circuit the organic process. 

“By using just 5%  more organic material the soil will be 3 to 4 times more capable of retaining water which significantly reduces the demand for irrigation,” Bob explains.  Once a lawn gets the right organic balance, it looks and stays healthy longer, and requires less water and chemicals to stay that way.

Ann-Marie Powell of the House and Home section of the Financial Times made a selection of the best new products at the 2011 Chelsea Flower Show in London.  The Biotop Living Pool was among seven products selected.  R. P. Marzilli & Company is the first Biotop representative in the USA and constructed the first Biotop Natural Pool in the Northeast recently.  Congratulations to Biotop!

Jason Shute and his team from R. P. Marzilli & Company were featured in this article from the Register-Star Newspaper in New York as they completed the task of digging large Pin Oak trees from a nursery and transplanting them at a client’s site.   The trees are over 40 feet tall and have 14″ caliper trunks.  The photos are just a glimpse of the skill and hard work required to complete this task.

Congratulations to Keith LeBlanc Landscape Architecture for receiving the Residential and Garden Design Merit Award for the Lowder Brook Residence. The award will be presented at the annual Boston Society of Landscape Architects Awards Gala on April 28th. We are proud to have installed this project for KL-LA and look forward to celebrating at the BSLA Gala!
